Scream Queens and Final Girls
Ah yes. The Scream Queen. The term coined in 1933 after the release of King Kong. The term usually refers to a helpless woman who screams really loud in a horror film and then usually ends up being killed. This was the way it was for most horror movies and more than likely the victim was not a virgin a woman being punished for having sex, very biblical of them.
However, movies like the Scream franchise and Halloween turned this stereotype on its head by introducing the final girl. Now I don't have much experience with the Halloween movies part from folding the Micheal Meyers costume when I worked at a Halloween store in high school. But I have watched Scream and the way it turns Sydney from your typical scream queen into a final girl. The final girl surpasses all of the typical expectations of a woman in a horror movie usually she had sex, she's scrappy, and she fights back. This formula is the new expectation in
horror movies with movies like Happy Death Day, Ready or Not, and many many more. let me just say horror movies are so much more fun with a strong female lead
