Bad Boys are like Drugs
Oh, poor Patrica she fell for the bad boy who treats her horribly. Haven't we all been there? Why is Michel as a character and his archetype so beloved? We see this over and over again. With Draco tok in 2020, Chuck Bass from Gossip Girl, Going as far as the Villains in the Marvel Cinematic Universe like the beloved Loki. Women love men who we know would treat us like trash. The archetype of the bad boy that is suave and confident and let's face it extremely attractive has kept us reeling since the beginning of film.
But why is my question? Why the bad boy? And how does Michel do it so well? Well no matter how independent bad biscuit you are there is something so compelling about a masculine energy. The swagger the confidence the overwhelming amount of testosterone. It draws you in kind of like in cartoons when a character is really hungry and then you see the waves of scent from the kitchen and the cartoon starts floating through the air toward the scent. It doesn't make sense but it happens it's wired in our psychology. It doesn't matter if everyone else is telling you no you have to go explore it and get hurt by it along the way.
Not only that but it's freeing in a way... socially liberating. The pressure we put on women to be good, kind, just, and motherly. Is so incredibly present in our day-to-day lives that it can become exhausting. When you're with the "Bad-boy" you do things you've never even dreamed of, like stealing cars. You can be someone else or maybe even your truest self with him and that feeling is related to him. The adrenaline associated with him is like a drug you just can't quit. It's invigorating and terrifying and painful. You truly do fly then crash and burn within a short period of time.
But why Michel? Well, if we look at Patrica she is hardworking and does it all for herself type of good girl. She follows the book that is pushed for women that aren't in the line of becoming a housewife. She is successful and works hard she is a bit uptight and knows what she wants. But when Michel walks in speaking french and kissing her shoulder being so confident and arrogant she just can't ignore it. He is the opposite of her and that's exciting. I believe she didn't ever love him. If she did it would have been much harder for her to turn him in and then watch him die an excruciatingly long death. But she was in love with who she was with him. The bad boy in the getaway car and her in the passenger seat. It was an adventure. But, if your entire life is an adventure are you ever truly on one? This is why she was finally able to close that chapter at the end of the film and turn him in because she had her fun and she was ready to face reality again.
The bad boy is a complicated suave man. Who will sweet talk you and help you escape for a moment but like drugs if you take too much there are consequences.

Why Michel, indeed?! I love that you are able to both critique the character AND embrace the strange phenom that is the "bad boy." There are books and books about this! Consider it for your Fascination Project?! I notice your Mr. Darcy post suggests this is a struggle/fascination for you. Go with it, I say!
